If you cast your mind way, way back, you might recall the promising MMO project that was Stargate Worlds. Based on the hit sci-fi franchise from the ’90s and 2000s, Stargate Worlds was announced in 2006 and progressed all the way to the beta stage by 2008. Unfortunately, the collapse of studio Cheyenne Mountain Entertainment in 2010 meant the end of hopes for this MMO, even as it was nearing launch.
Over a decade-and-a-half later, some fans haven’t given up on Stargate Worlds, even if most forgot its very existence. These fans banded together to create a rogue server for an MMO that never launched, and you can actually play it right now (standard caveat about rogue servers not always being secure and fully trustworthy aside). The server is currently in alpha testing and is completely free, but the devs note that there are few quests available at the moment.
The team bills this as “a fan-made universe faithful to the Stargate saga, built little by little by fans for fans.”
“For the past months, we’ve been working on a preservation project called The Fifth Race,” the team said on Reddit. “Our goal is to make the game playable again using the original closed beta client from 2008. Since the original server code is gone, we reverse-engineered the network protocol and rebuilt the entire backend from scratch using C, Python, and PostgreSQL.”
