Ship of Heroes will officially sunset after just one year of live operation

Normally a one year anniversary is a momentous and celebratory occasion, but in the case of Ship of Heroes, that anniversary is going to mark the ill-fated MMO’s end of operation, as the game will sunset on Tuesday, September 22nd.

“We are grateful to our friendly community who guided development by answering over 220 polls, providing feedback during a dozen free public events and feature tests, and on our website forums,” the announcement reads. “Together, we achieved our goal of launching the game we set out to build: an MMORPG with a new story, a positive tone and friendly community, and unusual fun mechanics that allow players to create unique characters with unique progressions through the game.”

The post further talks up SOH’s accomplishments across its nine years of development leading to its launch last year, along with work on a mission maker that both players and devs could use. Yet even as the tool and 40 new missions made by the team “passed a closed beta with flying colors,” the shrinking dev team “slowed progress to a crawl” and ultimately led to this sunset.

Readers no doubt recall this one’s disastrous launch, which was not helped by a high box price and required subscription, but even when that price was lowered and its sub was dropped, the damage appeared to have been done even as Heroic Games attempted to “soldier on” and players continued to rag on the game. Eventually the updates and player count slowed to a trickle and finally led to this unfortunate yet also unsurprising end.
