GTA 6 has given Cliff Richard an unexpected boost in popularity almost 50 years after the release of one of his biggest hits, but the 86-year-old singer still doesn’t know what Grand Theft Auto is.

Richard’s 1976 song ‘Devil Woman’ was featured in Rockstar’s extended look at GTA 6 and will appear on one of the game’s many radio stations, introducing his music to an entirely new generation of listeners.

The impact has been substantial, with the track enjoying a massive increase in streams and Richard gaining hundreds of thousands of new monthly listeners on Spotify.

However, when the singer was asked about his newfound gaming fame, it became clear he wasn’t particularly familiar with the franchise responsible.

Speaking to The Times, Richard revealed that he first learned about his appearance in GTA 6 through his family.

“I was told this happened!” he explained. “My nephew, who has two boys, said they came screaming to him, ‘Dad, it’s Uncle Cliff!’ They didn’t realise I could sing like that.”

But despite being aware of GTA 6, he’s not fully clued up on what it actually is. “The show is a game show, isn’t it, really? One of the biggest on TV?” he asked.

While Richard might not know much about GTA, the fans of the game have certainly been getting to know his music. ‘Devil Woman’ reportedly went from around 96,000 additional weekly Spotify streams before the GTA 6 showcase to more than one million during the week it aired.

Meanwhile, Richard’s monthly Spotify listeners climbed by 230,501, an increase of 12.5%, in just seven days.

Despite not fully understanding the game behind the sudden attention, Richard is pleased that younger audiences are discovering his music.
