A big day for what was previously an MMO, Dune: Awakening version 1.5 has been released expanding the game to let you play however you want.
You don't have to play with anyone else now, it has a full single-player mode with tons of tweaks to make it worthwhile. But, you can still play with others all the same if you choose to. Nice to have options huh? There's also a lot more settings you can play with to tweak the experience to your liking. You can control sandstorms, security zones (make Hagga Basin fully PvP or fully PvE), harvesting and XP multipliers, building piece limits, item durability, base decay, sandworm and Coriolis auto-spawn, what drops on death, and your maximum land claims and so on.
Some of the changes made for single-player:
- The Exchange now acts as a vendor with a large selection of items you can purchase.
- The Landsraad simulates other guilds to ensure a dynamic and believable Landsraad competition that progresses even without player participation.
- The Coriolis storm is still a very dangerous storm, but it will no longer instantaneously kill the player and wipe the Deep Desert. Players can now keep their progress there.
- The Cartographer skill now extends the player’s Fog of War reveal radius.
On top of all that, the first part of the story is now actually complete so you can go all the way through it.
There's masses more on top of that. They've re-done the main experience to be centred around your characters directly, not servers. The new main menu presents your characters and lets you take backed-up bases and vehicles with you depending on where you pick to play, but single-player characters are exclusive to single-player which seems fair enough.
Server hosting is also easier than ever with your own PC now able to host a game for up to 40 players.
And, thanks to their work for the console releases, they've made some big optimizations to the game. And lots more can be seen in the announcement. The only downside is cross-play isn't live yet but they said it's coming sometime hopefully soon.
